How Solar Works
Here’s an overview of how residential solar energy systems typically work:
Ready to go solar? Click here to get started

Residential solar systems start with solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, installed on the roof or in an open area with good sunlight exposure. These panels are made up of many smaller units called solar cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity.
The DC electricity generated by the solar panels needs to be converted into usable alternating current (AC) electricity that can power your home. This is done by an inverter, which is usually installed near your electrical panel.
The AC electricity produced by the inverter can either be used directly in your home or fed back into the electrical grid. Your home’s electrical panel manages the distribution of this electricity to power your lights, appliances, and other devices.
When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, the excess electricity can be sent back into the grid. This is where net metering comes in. A special meter tracks how much excess electricity you send back to the grid, and you receive credits for this electricity on your utility bill. (Many utilities no longer or do not offer Net Metering)
Residential solar systems are typically connected to the utility grid. This allows you to draw electricity from the grid when your solar panels are not producing enough electricity (e.g., at night) and to feed excess electricity back into the grid.
Many solar systems come with monitoring software that allows you to track how much electricity your panels are producing and how much you are consuming. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the panels and checking the system’s performance, helps ensure optimal efficiency.
Some homeowners choose to install battery storage systems alongside their solar panels. These batteries store excess electricity generated during the day for use during periods of low sunlight or during power outages, reducing reliance on the grid.
